History of Albuquerque, NM
There has been a belief in history that the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico got its name from the governor Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdes. The reason that they believe that he named the city Albuquerque is because of de la Cueava, and his aristocratic title of the Duke of Albuquerque. This name was started before the 12th century in Iberia, and was an older Spanish town. Albuquerque, New Mexico was founded in the early 1700's and is now the largest city in the entire state. The Early Years of Albuquerque When the city was first founded, it took the form of a small Spanish village. In the beginning, it was only made up of about eighteen different families. It had several different government buildings and residential homes. It even had a small church. Even to this day if you visit the city, you will find the beginnings of the city to be a tourist attraction. They have kept it much in its older form so that people can see what it was like back in the day. It is now known as the "Old Town" district of the city. It is very cultural, and has a lot of sense of history and elegance behind it. Albuquerque was an integral part of the Civil War. Most people who know about the Civil War are familiar with the Battle of Albuquerque. During this battle, there were several people who died, but in the end it was a vital part of the war. By learning more about the war, you can learn more about the history of Albuquerque and how it came to be the important American city that it is today. This was really a turning point in the city's history. Growth in Albuquerque Soon after the war, there was a railroad that was formed and brought about the town of New Albuquerque. This brought about a lot of newcomers to the area and also started a center of commerce that made up the Downtown Albuquerque area. This is when the area really started to grow. With an increase in the number of people who lived in the area, there was also an increase in the amount of crime. Because of this, there was a marshal appointed to help oversee the justice in the city. His name was Henry N Jaffa. Also due to growth, there was a public high school established in the area around this same time. In the early 1900's the growth in the city continued rapidly. In fact, Route 66 started to become a very populated road. Because of this, there were many businesses that started to form- including numerous motels, dining facilities, and other shops. This made way to the point where Albuquerque is today, as one of the largest and fastest growing cities in all of North America. Albuquerque Today Today, Albuquerque is very heavily populated. It has had a lot of urban development over the years, and has since grown to have many apartments, nice houses, and renovations. They also have a lot of major highways and interstates that run through the city. Crossing the Rio Grande is also much easier because there are a total of six bridges, including the Alameda bridge, the Paseo del Norte bridge, the Montano bridge, the I-40 bridge, the Old Town bridge, and the Barelas bridge. There are also some great railways that help to decongest the traffic in the area. These are some of the most recent updates that have been made in the city of Albuquerque.
